Rice Cooker Hokkaido Cream Stew (Simple & Fuss-Free)
I discovered recently that I can make my family’s favourite Hokkaido Cream Stew in a rice cooker. Not exaggerating, but this is a life-altering discovery for a busy mum like me! Any toddler mama will attest that it’s such a challenge to make meals with a clingy, needy toddler at your feet.
This one’s so simple. All the ingredients go into the rice cooker, and when it’s done, you get a rich, creamy, nutritious stew that you can serve with rice or bread (for dipping). I love anything that makes a mama’s life simpler and smoother, so here’s sharing it with you.
INGREDIENTS (will yield 4-5 servings of stew)
1 large yellow onion, sliced into thin strips
2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
2 carrots, peeled and cubed
1 small head of broccoli, cut into bite-sized florets
300g chicken fillet or chicken breast, skinless, cut into bite-sized chunks
Salt and Pepper, just a little sprinkle, for seasoning the chicken
1 block (i.e. half packet) of House brand Hokkaido Stew Cream
METHOD
Cut chicken into bite-sized chunks, then rub with salt and pepper. Set aside.
Into your rice cooker, add the following (in order):
Sliced yellow onion, spreading it out so that it covers the bottom
Carrots
Potatoes
Then add 200ml - 300ml of water (adjust according to how thick you prefer the stew to be. I make mine with 300ml and it’s got the consistency of cream soup.)
Chicken chunks
Set your cooker to white rice mode.
After 15 minutes, add cream stew (roux) block. No stirring needed.
After another 10 minutes, add broccoli (it cooks fast, so we’re adding this last).
When the rice cooker is done, open the cover and stir. Let cool for about 15 minutes.
Serve with freshly baked garlic bread or your choice of rice. Enjoy!
Where to get the Hokkaido Stew Blocks?
This is what the box looks like. It’s all in Japanese, so I’m not able to tell you what it says, heh.
The brand is “House” and they are commonly stocked at Cold Storage and Fairprice outlets that have an international section. Do note that for this recipe, you should get the blue box (not the green).
I hear through the grapevine that Donki stocks them at a great price when there’s a discount.
Inside the packaging are two sections of blocks. I typically only need one section when I make this recipe.
You can also order it from Shopee here.
Happy cooking!
